China

Overview

China's rapid economic growth and increasingly accessible markets make it one of our most significant export destinations.

China is our third largest export market after Japan and Korea, largely built on mineral and resource exports although the export of Queensland goods and services to China continues to grow.

Emerging opportunities in China include:

  • Mining equipment, technologies and services
  • Marine
  • Aviation
  • Architecture and design
  • Biotechnology
  • Education and training
  • Tourism services
  • Beauty and lifestyle products and services
  • Creative industries including e-games
  • Environmental management
  • Urban planning.

Significant opportunities also exist in agribusiness and food, targeting the large consumer market in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing as well as other cities across China.

The China Marine Strategic Export Project is a current key initiative targeting growth sectors in China's marine industries.

Key opportunities for Queensland businesses in the China marine sector include:

  • Design, constructing, fitting-out and managing marina developments
  • Supplying boatyard equipment
  • Researching and designing boats, yachts, components and other technologies used in the marine industry
  • Safety marine equipment and training
  • Training in event organisation, yacht club management and operations.

China's major coal mining industry presents further opportunities for Queensland companies. The mandate from the Chinese Central Government to consolidate the country's mines and to improve their efficiency and operational safety creates opportunities for sophisticated mining extraction equipment and mine safety training programs.

The Coal Mining Equipment and Services Strategic Export Project is assisting Queensland firms to earn export deals in this growing market. Consequently, the Queensland Government organises a trade mission to attend the China Coal and Mining Expo in Beijing in November each year.

The Queensland China: World Expo 2010 and Beyond export growth strategy is another significant initiative to connect Queensland companies with China. Using the World Expo as a platform, our smart export capabilities will be promoted in Shanghai and across China during this significant international event.

Other opportunities include:

  • Beauty and lifestyle products, services and training
  • Creative industries including online games development and IT software for the financial industry
  • Education and professional training
  • Agribusiness including beef and fruit (mango, citrus, macadamia)
  • Food including processed food and wine
  • Tourism.

Queensland China Council

Queensland China Council, established in October 1988 by the Queensland Government to facilitate commercial, cultural, educational, scientific and technical interchange between Queensland and China, plays a valuable role in enhancing the Queensland-China relationship and promoting Queensland exports to the Greater China regions. The Council is funded by the Queensland Government and supported by a Secretariat based within Trade Queensland.
