Europe & Russia
Overview
Europe
The European Union (EU) consisting of 27 countries ranks as Queensland's second largest merchandise export market and our major focus is on supporting high-value, knowledge-intensive goods and services exports.
Trade Queensland is working with Queensland firms for them to become familiar with the multiple-market nature of the EU and providing advice on market entry preparation.
Export success is already being experienced in the ICT, mining services, medical and scientific equipment and technologies, aerospace and satellite navigation technologies.
In recent years there has been significant export growth in Queensland's knowledge-intensive industries including pharmaceutical products, electrical, medical and automotive equipment.
Medicinal and pharmaceutical product manufacturing for example has consistently been in the top 10 for export dollar growth to the United Kingdom over the last decade.
The German market for medical devices is by far the largest in Europe and with the Queensland medical and scientific equipment sector showing export potential, innovative and highly technical firms could benefit from export assistance.
The United Kingdom is a major market for Queensland manufacturing, marine, food, natural products and niche software products.
The Driving Export Growth for Queensland strategy outlines ways to promote export sales in emerging areas such as natural products, fine food and creative industries including music.
Trade Queensland is reviewing major events in Europe to see what opportunities they offer to Queensland businesses. For example, the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympics in London are likely to present export opportunities in infrastructure and sports training.
We are also assisting Queensland musicians and arts with opportunities to showcase their talent at music industry events in the United Kingdom.
The high-end markets in Europe represent significant export opportunities for Queensland Indigenous arts. Through partnerships with prestigious overseas galleries, international event promoters and festival organisers, the Queensland Indigenous Arts Marketing and Export Agency (QIAMEA) is raising the profile of Indigenous visual and performing arts and literature in the European markets.
Russia
Queensland is leading the way in Australia in developing business relations with Russia with two-way trade and investment continuing to grow.
In just three years, Russia has moved from being our 41st largest merchandise export destination in 2003-04 to the 21st in 2006-07.
Russia has emerged as a market of considerable interest for Queensland exporters particularly in mining technology, ICT business software solutions, engineering services and agribusiness.
Major Russian expenditure on infrastructure such as roads, rail, aviation and shipping ports, waste water and housing development represent significant opportunities for Queensland.
Over the past two years we have developed strategic relationships collaborating on opportunities in mining technologies, public and private sector infrastructure, education and training, creative industries, business services and ICT and in cultural exchange, science and technology and the environment.
The Queensland Russia: Towards 2010 strategy, announced in 2007, has three key elements driving export growth in Russia. They are:
- Partnership in innovation to advance research and technological collaboration with Russian partners in global navigation satellite systems technologies, mining and energy related technologies including mine land rehabilitation and agricultural technologies including livestock traceability.
- Regional Russia to promote Queensland as a partner of choice and investment and study destination with regional partners in Russia. Joint programs are being developed for research-based conferences and seminars in areas such as environmental management and sustainable development.
- Trade and Investment Growth Plan to diversify the range of services and goods being exported to Russia and increase the number of Queensland firms doing business there.
