International development business
Overview
International development agencies provide more than A$45 billion in funding a year in loans and technical assistance to developing nations in the Asia-Pacific region. The priority markets for Queensland's international development business sector are South-East Asia, Papua New Guinea, Pacific Island countries, Africa and central Asia.
Many developing nations in the region benefit from Queensland's expertise in:
- Agribusiness services and equipment: In response to global economic, environmental and consumer pressures, Queensland's agricultural production and processing technologies are among the most efficient in the world. The agribusiness sector provides services to developing countries particularly those with tropical and semi-tropical climates similar to Queensland.
- Education and training: The Queensland education and training sector has been involved in international development work for more than 30 years. Queensland institutions have worked on a variety of international projects using services and programs tailored to meet the individual needs of each society.
- Environmental protection: The Queensland Environment Management Industry (EMI) has the capability to provide solutions for cleaner water, air and soils; increased productivity; and reduced waste through cleaner production and eco-efficient practices. Queensland's EMI technology and expertise has been developed and tested under wide-ranging climatic and geographic conditions. Our environmental enterprises are also internationally competitive in water and waste water treatment.
- Governance: Governance is the economic, social and political fabric of a country. Effective governance ensures that transparent decision making and sound fiscal, monetary and trade policies are established which are essential for investor confidence. The Queensland Public Service is committed to maintaining a high standard in strategic management and leadership, corporate governance, law and order, financial management and administration, procurement, corporate planning and stakeholder management.
- Health care: Queensland's health care industry has a proud tradition of excellence in health care solutions. Queensland firms have solid experience and expertise in clinical and consulting services, education and training, facilities design, construction and fit-out.
- Infrastructure design and development: Queensland has a reputation for innovative, responsive and independent services for construction management, engineering and environment practices. Queensland has significant strengths in infrastructure design and development and experience in finding the right solutions to create environmentally and economically sustainable urban developments.
Major projects
The Queensland Government has developed an International Development Business strategy based on a public-private partnership model that allows Queensland businesses to jointly tender with Government for valuable contracts. Importantly, the strategy also ensures Queensland skills and products are at the forefront of the tendering process.
Benefits to businesses include establishing an international reputation, developing new products and services, expanding markets and participating in joint ventures.
