Sports business
Overview
Queensland has a global reputation for coordinating and hosting major international events such as the Goodwill Games 2001 and the Gold Coast Indy 300.
Globally competitive capabilities in facilities development and operation, sports goods and services and event management underpin our success in attracting major international events.
As demand for new, state-of-the-art facilities increases, Queensland is well prepared to continue its leadership in the sports business industry.
Historically much of Trade Queensland's work in the sports business sector has been in the Asian markets. Asia remains a key market. However, emphasis is now on securing opportunities arising from major events throughout the world rather than specific markets.
AISES
The Queensland Government, through Trade Queensland is now an official member of the Australian International Sporting Events Secretariat (AISES). AISES is the collaboration between the State Governments of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Through AISES relationships, contacts and initiatives, Queensland sports business companies now have far greater access to the organising committees of the world's major sporting events including Olympic, Commonwealth and Asian Games.
Facilities development and operation
Queensland has world-class expertise and experience across the full spectrum of facilities including arenas, stadia, convention centres, racecourses and performing art theatres throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
A number of Queensland architects have won both local and international awards for sports and tourism infrastructure. Queensland businesses were also involved in designing and developing operational plans for Olympic Park and Darling Harbour for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Sports goods
Queensland manufacturers produce a vast range of international-standard sporting equipment including boats, yachts and leisure craft, sports clothing, footwear and accessories, sport supplies and merchandise.
Sports services
Sports services in Queensland include training, coaching and education programs for individuals and groups, sports consultancy services and sports tourism such as escorted cycling tours and snorkelling and scuba diving training and trips.
Event management
With expertise in concept development, budgeting, conducting and presenting multi and single sporting events, Queensland companies can assist in developing sports strategies, product and brand strategies to market and promote sports, sports management organisations, franchises, sporting events and personnel.
Queensland companies also have expertise in major event assessment and acquisition and designing and managing surf and motor sport events.
Major projects
Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games
India's rapid economic growth has led to many new opportunities. Given our strength in producing construction, infrastructure, architectural design and professional service solutions, Queensland firms are well placed to meet the needs of Indian firms. Trade Queensland is also investigating opportunities associated with staging the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.
London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics
Trade Queensland is investigating opportunities associated with the staging of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympics. Opportunities from the Olympics and Paralympics exist not only in London but across the United Kingdom.
The Queensland Government has signed a Statement of Intent with Yorkshire Forward, a government-funded economic development agency based in the north of England. Yorkshire Forward is bidding to generate economic advantage from the Olympics, just as Queensland did for the Sydney Olympics. The Queensland Government is examining opportunities that may develop by working with Yorkshire Forward.
