Cadetship strikes new career opportunities

Andrea Rogers' career in the high-profile world of international mining business began with a six-month cadetship when she was fresh out of university, and she hasn't looked back since.

Andrea was selected for Trade and Investment Queensland's International Business Cadet program in 2005, and matched with GroundProbe to work in the USA market.

GroundProbe is a Queensland-based technology company supplying slope measurement systems and services to the mining industry.

Andrea's brief was to work in Los Angeles to gather market intelligence for GroundProbe to build on their customer contacts in the USA.

"I travelled throughout the mid west, meeting with GroundProbe customers, and identifying prospective business opportunities for the company," said Andrea.

"The cadetship provided me with a strong understanding of the business process, and enabled me to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained in university to a real-life business scenario.

"The opportunity to work in a foreign market at such an early stage in my career was an immensely valuable business and career experience.

"Since the cadetship I've been working for a large diversified mining company, and am currently leading a Human Resources Process team as part of a large transformational change project for the business.

"The cadetship experience has definitely helped me with my job, providing me with a solid understanding of Queensland trade, market conditions and the ability to network with Queensland-based exporters and government agencies.

"I've recommended the cadetship to many friends and colleagues as a great way to get the confidence to apply the skills and knowledge you gain at university in the business world."
