  2012 International Business Cadets

2012 International Business Cadets

The International Business Cadet program is an excellent opportunity to enter the world of international business and develop a valuable network of contacts.

Trade and Investment Queensland is looking for highly-motivated and talented individuals to participate in the IBC program for 2013. During the 29 week program cadets will work closely with the Queensland Government, its international network of Trade and Investment Queensland offices and with industry.

Where could a cadet be placed?

Cadets can be placed in one of the following Trade and Investment Queensland offices:

  • The Americas (Los Angeles and Santiago)
  • China (Shanghai and Guangzhou)
  • Europe (London)
  • India (Bangalore)
  • Japan (Tokyo)
  • Korea (Seoul)
  • Taiwan (Taipei)
  • Middle East (Abu Dhabi)

What would the international placement involve?

Cadets will be required to undertake a research project for an organisation (industry partner) that is aimed at increasing trade and investment opportunities for Queensland.

Cadets will be matched with an industry partner who plays an integral role in the program, not just financially, but through mentoring and feedback throughout the program. They also provide pre-departure training to allow cadets to gain a better understanding of their organisation, its products and services and to help develop a project proposal.

In return, business partners receive a copy of the final report to help identify opportunities in, and access to, the relevant market. While in-market, cadets are expected to provide their industry partners with the latest information on issues relating to their business interests and put them in contact with potential business partners.

Most of the five weeks prior to departing for the overseas posting is spent with the industry partner, except for an induction program with Trade & Investment Queensland and the progressing of administrative requirements, including visas, required for international travel. Cadets and industry partners may also be invited to relevant business functions hosted by the Minister for Trade or other export related activities undertaken by Trade and Investment Queensland or other agencies involved with export or investment attraction.

While in the overseas office, the cadet works alongside the overseas Trade and Investment Queensland team. About 80 per cent of the cadet's time will be allocated to the sponsor's project work and 20 per cent will be spent on day-to-day operations, marketing and other research activities.

How can the cadetship help your career?

Through the program, cadets will develop market knowledge and a network of contacts, providing them with a distinct competitive advantage when applying for jobs in Queensland's export industries.

Former cadets have secured employment in a range of internationally-focussed business development roles on completion of the program. Around 20 per cent of past cadets are working overseas and a number have established their own businesses in Queensland.
