Language no barrier for business

Jacqueline Gray has turned a love for the Japanese language into a successful career helping businesses build their market potential thanks to the unique opportunities of the International Business Cadet (IBC) program.

Jacqueline joined Trade and Investment Queensland's cadetship in 2001 as a graduate of Griffith University, and was placed in Tokyo with Worldlingo and Software Engineering Australia.

During her time there, she worked closely with the local business community to identify business opportunities and partners in Japan for Queensland IT companies.

This placement opened up a world of opportunities that has taken Jacqueline from Tokyo to Scotland and England.

"Following the cadetship, I worked in Tokyo as Marketing Director, Japan for Eclipse Global Computing, where I coordinated sales and marketing strategies for the Japanese and Asia-Pacific markets," Jacqueline said.

"I then moved to Scotland with my husband, where I further honed my language skills as a tour guide and foreign language teacher for overseas students.

"In 2008, I formed my own business, JMG Consulting (UK) Ltd, which is based in England and helps businesses with their marketing needs, including business plans, website and document translation, and English language training.

"I've had the good fortune to work on many interesting projects during my career, from hosting sales and marketing events with top international business people, to attending huge trade shows and helping businesses access new overseas markets.

"The IBC helped kickstart my career by helping me make business contacts, and was a great introduction to how international business works.

"It was a unique and fun way to learn about business development, and help Australian companies break into foreign markets.

"Ten years on, I'm still using the skills and experiences from the cadetship in my work."
