South-East Asia

Overview

Strong economic growth, rising household incomes and increasingly open economies offer many export opportunities for Queensland businesses in South-East Asia.

Queensland is a major exporter to the region providing education and training, urban planning, tourism development, agribusiness, rail infrastructure, and environmental-related goods and services.

Our key South-East Asian markets include:

Malaysia

The Malaysian economy has transitioned from an agricultural economy to one that is driven by technology and knowledge. This transition brings with it opportunities for Queensland to collaborate with Malaysia in the knowledge-intensive sectors. Trade and Investment Queensland has already developed linkages with the Malaysian Government and commercial organisations to assist with collaborative opportunities in the development of knowledge-intensive goods and services.

Transport infrastructure development is also significant in Malaysia to help further support a growing economy. In this respect, Trade and Investment Queensland is providing a linkage between Queensland's railway expertise and the Malaysian market. In addition, Trade and Investment Queensland is working collaboratively with other areas of government to help Queensland's ICT sector to enter the Malaysia market.

Indonesia

Indonesia is our sixth-largest export market and an important destination for mining equipment, technology and services (METS), large infrastructure projects in transport (rail and road), green building and clean technologies, including renewable energy and environmental goods and services, agribusiness and manufacturing. Further opportunities are being pursued in education and training and development business.

Vietnam

While it is a difficult market to enter, Vietnam offers a number of opportunities for Queensland companies across a variety of sectors. Trade and Investment Queensland is pursuing opportunities in environmental goods and services, education and training, and large transport infrastructure projects, including rail and road.

Thailand

As one of South-East Asia's leading economic forces, Thailand provides significant opportunities for Queensland businesses, in areas such as transport infrastructure and building and construction.

Opportunities exist in housing systems, environmental services and technologies including waste water treatment and alternative energy supply. We are working with Queensland businesses to build on these opportunities.
