Case study: Stuart Robertson
International Business Cadet 2010
Investment in work experience pays off
Stuart Robertson has found his niche in the Japan export market, and improved his Japanese, through the International Business Cadet program.
Stuart was placed with Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) as a Trade and Investment Queensland cadet in 2010, and spent six months researching the market in Tokyo.
"QIC is a Queensland Government-owned corporation for finance and investment, so the research project was designed to inform their offshore strategy in Japan for corporate and boutique business opportunities," said Stuart.
"I learnt a lot during the six months I was a cadet, not only about the asset management industry but also how business operates in Japan and Australia.
"In particular, I gained a better understanding of cross cultural challenges that face businesses in foreign countries.
"During my cadetship, I developed a contact in market that has since led to my getting a new job with JFE Shoji, a Japanese trading company that is part of a large Japanese steel mill.
"I've gained experience in a few different business areas over the years, but have now found somewhere I can use all of the different skills I've acquired.
"There were a lot of benefits to the cadet program, from developing networks in market and gaining hands-on experience in international business, to the fun of being able to travel as part of the job - I goat to climb Mt Fuji for the second time!
"The cadet program is a great learning experience, will help out your career and most of all is very enjoyable.
"For someone coming out of university, I don't think there is a better way to begin your career."
