Overview
Queensland's transport and logistics sector offers world class expertise in research, design, planning, engineering and construction. The state's innovative engineering and technology solutions addressing physical, economic, environmental and technical challenges are in demand internationally.
Airport infrastructure
Queensland is the aviation and aerospace hub of the Asia-Pacific Region. After a decade of exceptional industry growth, there are now 16 500 aviation and defence related jobs in Queensland, 23 per cent of the Australian total.
Queensland is the only state to have four international airports with Brisbane Airport the third-busiest in Australia. Our industry expertise in design, research and development, master planning, engineering, construction and technologies are widely recognised, with Queensland-based companies assisting in the development of airport infrastructure both locally and internationally.
The state's aviation industry is well-placed to provide integrated solutions to airports endeavouring to improve infrastructure and efficiency.
Integrated and intelligent transport system (ITS)
Queensland is leading the introduction of smart solutions for the transport industry and in particular, systems and services which maximise transport system performance.
The state is home to several research centres with strengths in synergistic research fields such as autonomous vehicles, intelligent transport and intelligent vehicles.
Research centres include:
- University of Queensland Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Research Laboratory
- Griffith University Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems
- Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering.
ITS capabilities in Queensland extend from policy, strategy and planning through design, specification and procurement, independent verification and validation, and into construction, supervision, testing and commissioning.
Queensland companies can provide ITS treatments to a full range of complex transportation problems including:
- urban traffic management and control systems
- traveler information
- mobility systems
- public transport ticketing
- information and priority
- freeway traffic control and surveillance
- electronic tolling and fee collection systems
- environmental and facilities monitoring.
Roads
Queensland is the second largest state by area in Australia and over the past 12 months, the state's population was the second fastest growing in Australia. Queensland's unprecedented population and economic growth has increased the need for improved road infrastructure.
The state has world leading expertise in road innovations. Specialities include transport planning, consultancy services and project management. Expertise regarding road design, planning, maintenance and safety are also acknowledged internationally. Queensland is home to some of the most intricate road networks that incorporate bridges, tunnels, toll facilities and innovative road commodities such as variable message signs, safety barriers, self recovering sign posts - just to name a few. Queensland is also a leader in collaborative research and development in the road safety and injury prevention.
Queensland's road sector companies are highly regarded domestically and internationally and have a proven ability to deliver sustainable and innovative infrastructure for almost any climatic condition.
Ports
The Queensland coastline is host to 15 modern and efficient trading ports, two community ports and three smaller gazetted ports located at regular intervals from Brisbane in the south east to Karumba in the north west.
Queensland companies have a proven track record in providing port infrastructure expertise from feasibility studies to engineering, procurement and construction management.
Maritime
The development of training facilities for pilots in Queensland has earned an enviable international reputation as leaders in the on-going development and modernisation of their profession. Through the innovation of pilotage safety management systems and training programs, Queensland is underpinning a new pilotage paradigm, one to which the rest of the world is now starting to aspire.
Rail
Queensland boasts Australia's largest rail network, with 9 500km of track servicing a diverse area of 1.7 million square kilometres that encompasses the wet tropical regions in the north and the arid conditions of central Australia.
The state's rail transport, both passenger and freight, is one of the most modern and sophisticated in the world in terms of construction and consultancy services. Queensland's innovative engineering and technology solutions to overcome the physical, economic and technical challenges faced in rail transportation are now in demand around the world. The state's heavy-haulage railways carry some of the heaviest and longest freight-trains in the world.
Over the years, Queensland's railway industry has developed specialised expertise and acquired extensive experience in all aspects of the design, development, construction, operation, maintenance and refurbishment of modern rail systems. The industry's engineers have a proud record of achievement particularly heavy haul networks in remote locations and hostile environments. The industry's consultancy skills include:
- feasibility reviews
- route surveys
- planning,
- detailed design
- project management
- estimating and financial analysis of options, infrastructure reviews, passenger reservation systems, and information technology.
Logistics
Queensland's logistics capabilities cover inventory, warehousing, packaging and transportation. Capabilities also extend to large capital projects which usually require special handling, chartering of vessels and heavy-lift services by sea, air, road or rail, which is all supported by the latest IT tracking solutions. Queensland has key links with national and international trading partners and the success of this industry is also evident through an average rate of growth of six per cent per annum since 1990. The industry is also benefiting from an increasing consumer dependence on e-commerce.
